What inspired you to offer the Rise Up Singing workshop? JANE: Developing the freedom to sing has been a transformative life experience for me, and I'd love to facilitate others in that kind of process. ASHLEY: I've had many people approach me, wanting to know how to sing with their full voice and be confident in it. SAM: Bringing people together in community is one of my favourite things—and singing is one of the best ways to do it. In conversations around our own experiences, we realized that there is a lot of information out there on the technical aspects of singing, but not a lot of focus on what inhibits people's voices. This led to our idea of bringing people together in a supportive group setting to a) share any fears they might have, b) learn from each other, and c) let loose and have fun singing! You say there will be sharing and discussion in the workshop. Do I have to talk? Absolutely not. We will encourage you and offer opportunities to share, but you don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with. Will I have to sing a solo? We plan to create opportunities for everyone in the group—in areas such as soloing, chanting, harmonizing, and more. But you will never "have" to do anything! Your level of participation is up to you. What kind of music will we be singing? Death-metal opera. (Kidding!) We'll lean toward traditional and folk songs, stuff that's not too complicated. We'll be open to suggestions during the workshop. |
